Star Wars continues to thrive in its new home at Disney+ with the Obi-Wan Kenobi series recently taking the spotlight. The show garnered lots of attention and views, sparking loads of discussion, and of course tons of new memes, online.
- The Star Wars universe continues to expand on Disney+, with the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story spinoff Andor now taking center stage. However, it’s pretty tough to top a classic character like Obi-Wan Kenobi, so it comes as no surprise that the meme-makers of the world have continued to draw inspiration from the miniseries.
The series centered around the once great Jedi master who has been forced into exile but has been given a new mission to protect an important ally. Obi-Wan Kenobi has essentially become an instant classic within the Star Wars canon, and it’s clear that the fans have had a lot of fun riffing on the series.
So Uncivilized
Obi-Wan is no stranger to using a blaster, but it’s clear he prefers the weapon of the Jedi. However, during his battle with the cyborg villain General Grievous, Kenobi lost his lightsaber and had to adapt.
After finishing off his foe with a couple of well-placed blaster shots, Obi-Wan lets his distaste for his enemy and the weapon be known. His newfound use of blasters in the TV series is just one way in which Obi-Wan has changed since Revenge Of The Sith.
This Is The Darth Vader You Are Looking For
The return of Darth Vader is one of the show’s biggest appeals, and the larger-than-life villain gets right down to his dastardly ways as soon as he shows up. One of the very first things that the iconic baddie does is snap the neck of an innocent bystander.
Fans may have been worried that the family-oriented Disney may not like to portray Vader in all his wickedness, but those concerns seem to be Force-choked out with one swift snap in one of Kenobi’s biggest surprises.
Not Another Bait and Switch
Star Wars fans who tuned in to the previous series set in a galaxy far far away will recognize the humor in this meme. The Book of Boba Fett veered off course a bit by switching out the title character for the star of another series.
Thankfully, Obi-Wan Kenobi did not encounter such problems, as the series was quite laser-focused on the titular Jedi and managed to connect itself to the larger Star Wars universe without letting it overwhelm the show.
So Close Yet So Far
Desperate to make her years-long plans for ultimate revenge against Darth Vader, Reva spends her days hunting the elusive and infamous Obi-Wan Kenobi in an attempt to win Vader’s favor. Overlooking the city, Reva knows the Jedi is out there but still can’t pin him down.
She gets so close that they could basically talk to each other, which is something this Simpsons-based meme captures perfectly.
When You Can’t Keep Up With A 10-Year-Old
During her capture, the 10-year-old Leia is quite the elusive prey who is able to give some intergalactic bounty hunters the slip on more than one occasion. Either she is unbelievably quick for her age or these are some of the worst bounty hunters the galaxy has ever known.
Leia has always been more than capable in a sticky situation, but to completely leave her pursuers in the dust as a 10-year-old is nothing short of comedically unbelievable. While the show gets many of Leia’s characteristics right, this one seems a bit far-fetched and too goofy.
Whose Show Is It Again?
Although Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan is the title character, a lot of attention and fan support for the return of Hayden Christensen, this timing donning the iconic helmet of Darth Vader.
Christensen did not disappoint, giving fans some great Vader moments - a far departure from his reception in the prequel trilogy. If anything, the only disappointment was that he wasn’t a bigger star in the series, and hopefully that can be remedied in upcoming Star Wars projects.
These Two Have A History With Fire
There seems to be a fascination with and pull towards fire that is always surrounding Kenobi and his former apprentice. Whether it’s at the funeral of Qui-on Jinn, dueling over lava on Mustafar, being Force-dragged on burning sand, or another funeral, these fellas sure do spend a lot of their time burning.
Nothing recalls a memory like a familiar scent, and while it may be inappropriate for Kenobi to have a fond reminiscence of the good old days at a funeral, the smell of fried Vader was sure to jog something in the memory bank.
Some Men Just Want To Watch The World Burn
Kenobi’s most powerful antagonist is back and he is out to send a message to his old master. When the dark lord of the Sith, Darth Vader, shows up to continue his hunt, he wastes no time wreaking havoc on the surrounding area and people.
Like the girl in the meme, Vader takes pleasure in the destruction around him and wants nothing more than to make the people who betrayed him suffer. Obi-Wan Kenobi certainly had no problem perfectly capturing that aspect of his character.
The Perfect Jedi Hideout - Wendy’s
After the execution of Order 66, the Jedi have scattered all throughout the galaxy, some with better hiding spots than others. Apparently, one Jedi decided to hide at a local establishment, the modern-day real-world equivalent of hiding in a local restaurant, like a Wendy’s.
The joke of course a reference to the viral post about a Wendy’s order taker and the foolishness that the fast-food worker has to put up with. Having the Grand Inquisitor interrogate this poor worker is also surely above his paycheck.
It Had To Happen At Some Point, Right?
The anticipation of seeing Liam Neeson reprise his role as the master Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn was essentially an expectation from the start of Obi-Wan Kenobi, and thankfully the series did not disappoint.
The show went out of its way to show Kenobi reaching out in an attempt to contact his old master with the Force, so it was a foregone conclusion that Qui-Gon would appear at some point, and fans were relieved to see his translucent visage finally show up in the finale.
Anakin… NO!
A common, though incredibly dark, meme in the Star Wars fandom revolves around Anakin’s ruthless slaughter of younglings in the Jedi Temple during Order 66. Naturally, fans were shocked and elated when a young interviewer asked Hayden Christensen to show him some lightsaber moves.
The Obi-Wan Kenobi series indeed returned to the fateful night of Order 66, reminding fans of the true horrors committed by Anakin’s hand. Despite the prominence of the “killing younglings” meme, audiences received a necessary reminder of the moment’s tragedy as well.
Blame Qui-Gon
Obi-Wan spends much of the decade between Revenge of the Sith and his spinoff series contemplating where he went wrong in training Anakin. However, one hilarious cartoon reminds fans that Qui-Gon, not Obi-Wan, was the one that staked his faith in the young Skywalker all those years ago.
As hilarious as this meme is, it does raise an important point in that Qui-Gon has some answering to do following Anakin’s betrayal of the Jedi. Now that the fallen Jedi’s Force Ghost has finally appeared to Obi-Wan, perhaps he can further defend his choice to bring Anakin to the Jedi Temple.
All That Time
After learning of his master’s posthumous activity in Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan spends quite some time attempting to commune with his fallen friend. However, he is unsuccessful until the very last episode of his spinoff, wherein Qui-Gon finally appears and claims that he has been there all along.
The above meme questions if Qui-Gon was really present for the various important moments in the saga since his death. If so, he would have been able to see the various havoc that his choices wrought–and exactly how they affected his apprentice.
The 40-Year-Old Padawan
Fans were incredibly excited at the prospect of seeing Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen onscreen together again. However, their first scene together was somewhat encumbered by some shoddy de-aging done on Christensen, who is canonically around nineteen years old in the sequence.
As heartfelt and meaningful as their scene was, it was difficult for many viewers to look past how ridiculous it was to see the clearly adult actor portray a teenage version of himself. Nevertheless, it was a folly most fans could live with, as everyone was looking forward to seeing the two beloved actors interact once more.
He Said It!
Obi-Wan has had many memorable lines over the years, but none quite as beloved as “hello there.” These two words have become one of the most famous memes in the Star Wars fandom, with many viewers hoping to hear Ewan McGregor say the line one last time.
Though certain episodes squandered opportunities to include the line in the script, it was all working toward a purpose, as the finale saw Obi-Wan speak the fateful two words the first time he meets Luke Skywalker. The moment proved to be the perfect opportunity for some fanservice and left a heartwarming feeling in viewer’s hearts as the show came to an end.
