OnePlus today unveiled the OnePlus 5T, the successor to their six-month old flagship — the OnePlus 5. An iterative upgrade over the 5, the OnePlus 5T features largely the same specifications as its predecessor with some modest improvements in key areas. The highlight of the OnePlus 5T is its 6-inch FHD+ 18:9 AMOLED display at the front. Jumping on the bezel-less trend, the OnePlus 5T’s 18:9 aspect ratio display at the front is surrounded by minimal top and bottom bezels which is why despite the increase in display size, the phone has largely the same specifications as the OnePlus 5. Since the bezels at the front are too small to serve any purpose, OnePlus has moved the fingerprint scanner at the rear of the device and has done away with capacitive navigation buttons on the device. Apart from the display, OnePlus has also improved the dual-camera setup at the rear of the 5T. While the primary sensor remains the same 16MP f/1.7 shooter, it is now paired with a IMX376K f/1.7 sensor featuring 1.0um large pixels. This is not a telephoto lens and is aimed at improving low-light photography which is why the camera app will automatically switch to the secondary sensor in dimly light conditions. Despite being optimised for being used in low-light, the dual camera setup at the rear has to solely rely on EIS. Instead, the secondary camera relies on 4:1 pixel binning for improved low-light photos.
Internals of the OnePlus 5T remain the same as the 5 which means we are looking at an oct-core Snapdragon 835 chip running at 2.4GHz, 6/8GB RAM, 64/128GB of UFS 2.1 storage, and a 3300mAh battery with Dash Charge support. The front of the phone also continues to house a 16MP selfie shooter. Other features like NFC, dual-band Wi-Fi ac, GPS, dual-SIM connectivity, LTE, Bluetooth 5.0, and a headphone jack are also present. On the software front, the OnePlus 5T continues to run on OxygenOS which is still based on Android 7.1 Nougat. While it would have been great to see the 5T launch with Android 8.0 Oreo, OnePlus is promising the update by the end of this year for the device. OnePlus has redesigned the Camera app on OxygenOS to make it faster and easier to use. It now also comes with more options with the Portrait mode feature, which was first found on the OnePlus 5, being further improved here. Not to be left behind, OxygenOS on the OnePlus 5T also comes with Face Unlock. The OnePlus 5T goes on sale from November 21 in key markets across Asia, Europe and the United States. OnePlus has once again taken this opportunity to increase the price of its flagship handset. The base 6GB RAM/64GB variant of the OnePlus 5T is priced at $499 with the 128GB variant being priced at $559. In India, the price of the handset starts from Rs 32,999 and goes up to Rs 37,999. The handset goes on sale in India, Europe, and the US from November 21.
