In an interview with USA Today, OnePlus co-founder has revealed that the company will be releasing a second phone later this year. The company is aiming to release the phone sometime around Christmas, but did not provide any other details about it. Carl could not confirm whether the handset will come with specs that will be higher than the OnePlus 2 or not, but did reveal that his first reaction after seeing the prototype was “holy shit — that’s going to be my daily driver.” However, once Carl saw the production version of the OnePlus 2, which was also “super nice,” he decided to go with the latter. Carl also talks about the lack of NFC in the OnePlus 2 in the interview. He says that the issue has been needlessly overblown and very few people actually use NFC on the handset. He agrees that with the advent of Android Pay, NFC will become a very frequently used feature in Android devices within the next 12-18 months, but by then people would have moved on to another device. Additionally, Carl also makes a bold statement in the interview that five years down the line, Apple, Samsung and OnePlus are going to be the only smartphone players in the market, with everyone else dying because they could not “reach the sale they wanted fast enough or they couldn’t have a margin to sustain their business.” Carl also touches about OnePlus expanding to beyond smartphones, a fitness tracker that the company nearly made, and more in his interview.
