Three of the largest Chinese smartphone makers Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi are working on a file transfer feature that would work across all the smartphones across the three brands. The technology is touted to work on Wi-Fi Direct transfer and will employ Peer-to-Peer Transmission to transfer data from smartphones across Vivo, Xiaomi, and Oppo and the feature will be rolled out globally soon. The feature will allow users to transfer data without the need of having a third-party app or even internet.

With the latest update in mind, neither of the partnering brands dictated a timeline for the release of this feature. However, Oppo has provided a rough timeline when the feature will be available across its smartphones and that is from the commencement of February 2020.

According to the reports, the trio Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo are developing an AirDrop-like alternative for Android smartphones. With a market share of 24.6 percent as of Q2 2019, the alliance could make a lot of difference by rolling out this feature.

The technology will use Bluetooth Low Energy to search for the recipient or sender device and latch on to it. Here, users can select multiple files including formats like pictures, videos, documents, etc and transfer the files to the recipient device using Wi-Fi P2P technology. Since the protocol will be using P2P technology, it won’t interfere with the Wi-Fi connectivity. Furthermore, it will offer a maximum transfer speed of 20Mbps which is lightning fast when compared to transferring files over Bluetooth.

Oppo’s VP Andy Wu made a statement that the alliance between Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo would allow users to get user-centric file-sharing technology. With the market share of over 25%, this means that millions of devices will be able to transfer data worldwide.

Chinese smartphone maker Oppo will release the said feature with the upcoming Android 10-based ColorOS 7. The feature will be summoned as ‘Oppo Share’ on Oppo smartphones. It will be available across a hoard of devices including Reno 2, Reno 10x Zoom, F11 Pro, F11 Pro Marvel’s Avengers Limited Edition, Find series, F11, the upcoming F15 series, and so on. Oppo will soon roll out a similar feature across the Oppo R series, F series, and A series.

Xiaomi and Vivo will roll out the file transferring feature on their respective custom UIs as well although we aren’t aware of the timeline yet.
