The original The Matrix movie trilogy may exist within the world of the upcoming The Matrix 4 movie. The first movie in the franchise came out in March 1999 and launched John Wick action star Keanu Reeves to new heights of stardom. Directed by Lilly and Lana Wachowski, The Matrix set a new standard for special effects in action movies, and went one to become one of the most famous movies in the last 20 years. The Wachowskis went on to release two more movies in the franchise, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions both in 2003, and an anthology of animated shorts from famous animation directors around the world, The Animatrix, coming out the same year.

The new film, Matrix 4, was announced officially in August of this year by Warner Bros. and is being directed by Lana Wachowski alone while her sister Lilly Wachowski takes a break from making movies. It has been two decades since the series began and 16 years since the last film entries, but the Wachowskis had been busy in the meantime making Netflix original Sense8 and writing V for Vendetta in addition to writing, directing, and producing Speed Racer, Cloud Atlas, and Jupiter Ascending. Just last week, Warner Bros. announced May 2, 2021 as the release date for The Matrix 4.

Today, Knight Edge Media brings three videos posted on Vimeo all with the phrase Project Ice Cream in the title (the working title of Matrix 4), each an apparent audition tape for Matrix 4. In each, the actor talks about the first time they “played the trilogy” and “the paradox between free will and destiny” and addressing a Mr. Sanderson, a likely reference to Reeves’s character Neo, aka Thomas Anderson. The clips feature Broad City writer Josh Rabinowitz and Alex Poncio, who was in No Good Nick and Harley Quinn and the Joker VS The World. There is a third clip but no name is attached to the actor.

The plot of The Matrix movies have always been complex and even philosophical, and if these audition scripts reflect the actual plot of Matrix 4, it will bring more of that depth. It appears the original trilogy will appear as a series of video games within the world of the movie. The plot itself has not been revealed, and shooting doesn’t begin until 2020, so any details could change in the meantime. Or these actors may be using fake scripts to audition in order to keep plot details from leaking ahead of production. However, we do know that Keanu Reeves and Carrie Anne-Moss will be reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity, respectively, which makes the audition tapes even more interesting.

Previously, Reeves called The Matrix 4 script “very ambitious,” which is exciting or concerning depending on your faith in Lana Wachowski to deliver another entry in the series. The first two sequels were disappointing to many fans, although both remain creative and fun movies. For the die-hard fan, The Matrix 4 will undoubtedly be a welcome return to the series along with some new surprises.
